Djokovic Delivers Warning to Jannik Sinner: Suspension Will Hang Over Him Like a "Cloud"
Novak Djokovic has cautioned Jannik Sinner that his three-month ban for doping will persist over his career as a constant shadow – and raised doubts about the timing of the sanction last year.
Details of the Suspension
Sinner completed a three-month suspension in February 2025 after the World Anti-Doping Agency accepted his explanation that a banned anabolic steroid, the steroid clostebol, had entered his system accidentally.
"That cloud will follow him just as the Covid controversy will follow me, for the remainder of our respective careers," Djokovic stated in an interview on Piers Morgan: Uncensored.
"It's just something that, it was so major, and when that happens, with time it may lessen, but I don't think it will disappear. There will inevitably exist a certain group of people that will always try to bring that forward."
Djokovic's Perspective
Djokovic expressed belief that Sinner, his frequent training companion, "had no intentional involvement", but he proceeded to question how the Italian managed to serve his time without sitting out any major tournaments.
"There is the lack of transparency, the irregularity, the convenient timing of the suspension occurring between major events, so he avoids skipping important competitions – it's just it was very, very odd," he further commented.
Broader Tennis Community Response
"I really don't like how the situation was managed and it was evident numerous fellow athletes, both male and female, who had some similar situations coming out in the media and complaining that it was a preferable treatment."
